Artificial Grass FAQs

Is artificial grass affected by dogs or pets?

All Supreme Lawn products are pet friendly

Can artificial grass be laid on any surface?

A firm sub-base is essential and can form one of the most important parts of the installation. If installing to natural turf we would always recommend installing over a substantial sub base which consists of a weed membrane, 100mm of MOT Type 1 stone and 20mm of a limestone or Grano dust.  Grano dust will give you a more superior finished surface to lay the artificial grass onto and is more stable.  Make sure you compact all sub base materials with a compactor (vibrating wacca plate).

We do not recommend the use of sand as a base material as it is more unstable and moves and undulates over time potentially making the turf uneven and lumpy.

Artificial grass can be laid directly onto concrete or tarmac but it will mimic their levels.  The use of a shockpad under artificial grass will provide a softer feel when installed onto a hard sub base.

Does it need any maintenance?

Any surface requires maintenance to some degree or another to maximise its longevity and usefulness.  Removal of debris and leaf fall using a broom or leaf blower together with occasional brushing to lift any crushed pile is all you really need to do to keep it looking lush.

Moss can establish itself in some areas so apply a solution of iron sulphate granules diluted in water which will kill the moss off and after a week or two can be brushed or gently raked out.

Can it be laid on sloping ground?

Yes – For example we have installed artificial grass in children’s play areas to form play mounds.

Does it fade in the sunlight?

All Supreme Lawn products are UV stabilised and carry a manufacturer’s guarantee

Is artificial grass safe for children and pets?

All Supreme Lawn products are pet and child friendly

How long does it last?

Supreme Lawn products are installed into various facilities for various uses including sports centres, school playgrounds, nursery’s and pre-schools, domestic gardens and commercial areas such as pubs and cafés.  Each application requires a durable artificial grass surface.  Depending on the use and any maintenance carried out our Supreme Lawn products can last anywhere from 15-25 years. Areas that are subjected to excessive wear, such as goal mouths or entrances may last less or require more intensive maintenance attention.

Does it drain like real grass?

As much as it can do yes.  Our Supreme Lawn products have a latex backing with pre-punched drainage holes incorporated into the backing to allow water to pass through

What about installation?

Supreme Lawn artificial grass can be installed quite easily if you are relatively practical.  We offer an installation service should you require it.

What do I do about the edges?

Supreme Lawns artificial grass can be installed up to any edging system.  We recommend that the surface is not fixed totally around all 4 sides as the grass will expand and contract in hot/cold weather changes.  If the surface is fixed on all 4 sides you could experience ripples forming.

Can I install it myself?

Yes – artificial grass is relatively simple to install.  Alternatively we do offer an installation service.

Is it approved by Local Authorities?

Our Supreme Lawn products are used in many applications run or funded by local authorities such as Primary Schools, Nursery’s and Community Parks.

Is it environmentally friendly?

This is a matter of debate with arguments for and against.  Artificial grass does not require water, does not require mowing or strimming, and requires little chemical application to it therefore it benefits the environment.  It is not however living vegetation therefore it does not absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, or provide a habitat for other creatures.  Artificial grass can be recycled but not in its entirety

What about Sustainability?

This is done, in no small part, by providing a sustainable alternative to natural grass and the harmful side effects caused by its constant maintenance requirements. One of the most measurable “green” attributes of synthetic turf systems come from their impact on water usage

Can weed roots affect it?

As long as your artificial grass is laid with the proper surface preparation there will be no weeds growing through the turf.

Can I have a BBQ on my artificial lawn?

Whilst artificial grass has a low radius of ignition the carpet fibres will be affected by contact with or close proximity to extreme heat.  Therefore care should be taken when using a BBQ on an artificial grass surface.

Does the grass really feel and look like the real thing?

Our Supreme Lawn products are designed to mimic the look and feel of natural grass.  Whilst natural grass will alter in look and feel throughout the seasons artificial grass will not.

Why should I choose Supreme Lawns over and above other artificial grass suppliers?

Whilst many companies have emerged in recent years supplying artificial grasses our company has been at the forefront of artificial grass and its development for children’s play and landscaping use for over 25 years.  We have seen artificial grass develop from simple sand filled sports surfaces to the much more natural and “easier on the knees” range of products available today.  It’s also manufactured from various countries throughout the world with equally varying quality so we only supply the best quality artificial grass from the top global manufacturers.

Our Supreme Lawn range is manufactured by our selected partners in Europe using high quality yarns and manufacturing techniques with strict quality control to offer our customers artificial grass products produced and controlled to attain the highest quality possible.

How do I tackle stains and marks?

You can either hose through with clean water or for more stubborn stains simply apply a small amount of washing up liquid and gently brush with a stiff broom or hand brush, then hose through with clean water.

Do I need to protect heavy traffic areas?

Areas that are subjected to heavy weight may benefit from protection.  Benches, tables, flower pots and the like can subject the grass pile to crushing.  Similarly entrance areas or areas that have heavy traffic may experience pile crushing.  Protection mats made from offcuts of artificial grass can be used to protect such areas or alternatively these areas may require more intensive and regular brushing.

We also recommend heavy objects like plant pots be moved every now and again to lessen the burden on that particular area and reduce the wear in any one particular area.

What about weeds and moss?

As long as your artificial grass is laid with the proper surface preparation there will be no weeds growing through the turf.

Moss will attempt to establish itself on any surface if the areas are shaded or damp.  In such cases the moss should be killed off using a simple solution of water mixed with iron sulphate granules and then brushed or gently raked out.

Can real grass germinate in the artificial turf?

You may get natural grass germinating in artificial grass. If you see any natural grass growing just gently pull the grass out like you would if weeding a border.  Never leave it as it becomes harder to remove if it spreads.

Why should I choose artificial grass?

The uses and benefits of artificial grass are widely established.  The surface provides a soft, aesthetically pleasing, durable and low maintenance alternative to other products.

Does the shape of my garden make a difference?

Our range of artificial grass is available in widths of 4 and 2m and can be joined together using our jointing tape and adhesive to form increased widths.  The artificial grass itself can be simply cut to meet any shape using a sharp blade like a Stanley knife.

Where can the grass be used?

Artificial grass can be used for most applications you can think of and in most environments.  We have installed in places such as roof terraces and boat decks

How much grass do I need?

Our range of artificial grass is available in widths of 4m and 2m and can be joined together using our jointing tape and adhesive to form increased widths.  The artificial grass itself can be simply cut to any shape using a sharp blade like a Stanley knife.

Simply measure your area (length in m’s x width in m’s) and sketch out a plan.

Does it flatten?

Artificial grass fibres are manufactured with a profile and structure to help keep them stable, upright and with the ability to return to their original position.  The fibres will however crush to a degree after regular and intensive use therefor it is good practise to brush them up periodically.

Are there different types?

Our artificial grass products alter in colour, pile height, density, texture and look depending on personal preference, application required, and cost of production.

Is there a maintenance fee?

Routine maintenance of artificial grass is simple to carry out however should you want your surface maintained we have a dedicated maintenance division who can offer annual quotations or fixed price quotations for three or five years.

Does the grass get hot in sunlight?

An artificial grass surface will get warm as opposed to hot in sunlight.  Animals such as dogs and cats tend to choose artificial grass as their lounging area over other surfaces

Dog mess?

Our range of artificial grasses are all-permeable and so will allow any liquid to pass through easily. For solid waste, use the traditional poop scoop or doggy bag and rinse down with a hose afterwards. The artificial grass will also not lose colour as natural grass does.

What is infill?

Infill is used to help stabilise an artificial grass carpet with the weight of the fill preventing the surface from moving or rucking.  The infill also helps support the carpet fibres and keeps them upright.
