St Mary Magdalene Primary School

The Governors of St Mary Magdalene CE Primary School understood that their existing tarmac playground was outdated and represented a risk to the children to some extent.  They wanted to give the children a modern synthetic grass MUGA that could be used safely for sports and general play.

The existing area was tarmac that was of a reasonable standard which already had fixed metal sports panels which included five a side football goals, cricket wickets and practice targets but these were not being fully utilised because of the harsh tarmac area.  The drainage of the existing area was also of concern.

SSP Ltd were asked to help design and install a suitable system to the area.  Given the condition of the existing tarmac area the specification included drilling holes through it at 50cm centres and filling them with pea shingle to allow water to pass through to the sub base, installing a wet pour rubber shockpad to regulate the slightly undulating base and to provide an impact absorbent layer for the finished surface, and to install a Sports 1 artificial grass system complete with coloured artificial grass play lines for various sports and games.

On completion our company has offered a contract to St Mary Magdalene School to help them maintain the surface through our dedicated sports and play surface maintenance division.  Well maintained surfaces will maximise their longevity and help keep them safe and clean throughout the year.
